“Wood, if you stop to think of it, has been man’s best friend in the world. It held him in his cradle, went to war as the gunstock in his hand, was the frame of the bed he came to rejoicing, the log upon his hearth when he was cold, and will make him his last long home.

It was the murmuring bough above his childhood play, and the roof over the first house he called his own. It is the page he is reading at this moment; it is the forest where he seeks sanctuary from a stony world.”  Donald Culross Peattie - American Heartwood

Rustic Furniture Timber

Our in-house Rustic furniture collection is constructed from a high quality Quebec Pine (Pinus Strobus) sometimes referred to as Eastern White Pine.  Straight grained and even textured his timber is both visually attractive but also strong, stable and less liable to twist or warp, particularly when compared with other types of Pine often used in high street furniture ranges.

Quebec Pine is a slow growing species, harvested from the immense woodlands of Canada.  The cool Canadian climate produces trees that grow slow and straight.  The end result is a log which can be cut to produce an even, straight grain and unique patina.  Qualities long admired by true cabinet makers and shipbuilders.

The statuesque Quebec trees also produce attractive knots, a result of the long branches stemming from the trunk, which we do not sand out or fill as we believe they add so much character to each individual piece.  All such timber is harvested from managed plantations which are sustainably and responsibly controlled as you would hope and expect.

The logged timber is strapped up and seasoned before being hewn using circular and band saws.  The seasoning and cutting are both processes that can leave distinct markings on the raw wood.  Such markings are not fully sanded out, much like the veins in the palm of your hand; these markings are unique and tell the story of the woods life.

As a natural product each piece of timber is different in so many ways, as are the features resulting from our traditional manufacturing methods.  We will always look to complete orders from the same batch of timber to ensure as much uniformity as possible but please appreciate a natural product for what it is.

Final pieces could be slightly different in tone to samples received or existing pieces of furniture from the same collection.  Similarly, finishes on each piece ‘can’ vary, each cut of timber will react to waxes and stains differently.

Any differences are typically extremely subtle but something to be aware and most certainly not a fault.  These are the results of natural products, traditional methods and celebrating uniqueness not uniformity.

Old English Painted Furniture Timber

Our Old English Painted collection is constructed from Scandinavian Redwood.  We work with this timber for two primary reasons; it machines well, perfect for some of the more intricate aspects of the Old English range and also due to the fact it paints and takes stain to an excellent level of finish which is key for this range.

Fast growing and farmed specifically for cabinet making this is a very sustainable timber.  Less knotty than its Russian and Finnish cousins, Scandinavian Redwood is strong, stable and durable.
